Towards Guidelines for Good Practice for Awarding Joint Degrees

Representatives of 29 recognition information centres (ENIC-NARICs) met on 9 February 2012 in The Hague. This workshop was organised by NVAO in the framework of the JOQAR project.

The ENIC-NARICs discussed guidelines for good practices for awarding joint degrees. The aim is to provide higher education institutions (and their joint programmes) with guidelines for good practices for the award of joint degrees. Previous work on the recognition of degrees awarded by joint programmes (research, workshop) had led to the conclusion that  these degrees failed to get recognition (easily). The JOQAR project intends to alleviate this issue by providing guidelines for awarding joint degrees (aimed at higher education institutions and joint programmes) and recommendations for recognising joint degrees (aimed at credential evaluators).

The discussed guidelines for good practice are not intended to set standards. The aim of the guidelines is in fact to facilitate the full recognition of joint degrees. It intends to do so by clarifying the expectations of ENIC-NARICs regarding the design and the content of the degree and the diploma supplement. These expectations of course also regard the consortium offering the joint programme and the joint programme itself.

The guidelines will now be redrafted and will be finalised after a final round of consultation among ENIC-NARICs and joint programmes.  The final document will be published in the Summer of 2012.
